Standard Yard & Earthwork Coverage Rules

When estimating bulk materials such as mulch, compost, and gravel, always remember that 1 cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A single cubic yard will cover:

324 sq ft
at 1" depth
162 sq ft
at 2" depth
108 sq ft
at 3" depth
81 sq ft
at 4" depth

Always order 5% to 10% extra for wood mulches due to compaction, and 10% to 15% extra for crushed stone aggregates due to mechanical tamping compaction.
